Café Citron
our comments
In Dupont Circle territory, this Latino bistro looks as beckoning as a strawberry margarita, but its kitchen falters. The menu is ambitious enough, but its narrow spectrum focuses on an assortment of dishes that sound suspiciously like Tex-Mex cooking, with one or two Caribbean things thrown in for fun. We lunched on the daylong brunch menu offering of huevos rancheros, and the salsa poured over the eggs tasted more like canned than homemade. The Peruvian chupe de camarones, a thin broth with bits of seafood and vegetables thrown in for good measure, was fine. Escabeche de Pescado had a vinegar sauce that was too strong. We ended with a sautéed banana in a pool of a disappointing caramel/orange sauce.- April 2005
