The Vegetable Garden
our comments
The Vegetable Garden sits in an unassuming little shopping center off the busy Rockville Pike. Inside, images of broccoli, peppers and other vegetables adorn the walls as artwork. For more than a decade, the Vegetable Garden has served all vegetarian Buddhist-style Chinese food to the locals. Its lengthy menu includes several macrobiotic and Italian-inspired dishes with a variety of cooking methods. The Vegetable Garden stir-fries, deep-fries, bakes, steams, and has hot pot dishes. The menu contains color photos of almost all of the dishes so patrons can see the food before they choose. The menu also stars dishes with a heart, indicating heart healthy dishes approved by Suburban Hospital. Meals begin with a gratis wedge of Chinese-style carrot bread, a teaser for what’s to come such as spring rolls or dumplings. Dishes include General Tsao’s Chicken, which is made with soy protein. Or try an eggplant hot pot, or rice noodles mixed with vegetables. The sheer number of options are overwhelming. And save room for dessert – options include carrot cate, key lime pie and tofutti ice cream. Both local and national media call this one of the country’s best vegetarian restaurants.- April 2005
