Indebleu
our comments
One of DC’s trendiest and most mood-altering destinations is this fancy dining spot. It serves up style, chic and food that’s mostly French underlaid with potent Indian flavors. Sound unworkable? Think again, mes amis: the young Indian chef minding the kitchen knows his spice rack, and the food he produces has world-class élan. Amidst dressy patrons, climb upstairs to the dining room, all modern tones and shapes. Polished waitstaff anticipate everything, and within minutes, deliver a bottomless bread basket filled and refilled with lush, rosemary-scented Indian naan, a treat for nibbling while waiting for the rest of the meal. Eye- and mouth-candy, delectable appetizers resemble plated modern paintings and include such whimsies as white tandoori shrimp with shaved fennel (our favorite) or the seared foie gras sandwich with rose petal marmalade. If you have shrimp on the mind, order the shrimp-crusted salmon with saffron beurre blanc and mustard mashed potatoes---and yes, shrimp actually crust the salmon. As its partner comes the pan-seared Maine lobster with mango-lemon verbena cream---wild and wonderful. To end: the Oreo kulfi ice cream sandwiched in three split profiteroles accompanied by a mug of intense hot chocolate---a dream.- April 2005
